Kennedy Half Dollar Mintage
The mintages for Kennedy Half Dollars have varied widely during the course of the series. A large number of coins were minted for the first year of issue, which was also the final year of 90% silver composition issued for circulation. Another spike occurred in 1976, when a special Bicentennial reverse design was used.
Mintages showed a general decline in the following years, as the use of half dollars in circulation declined. From 2002 to present, the denomination was not produced for circulation, but only minted in small numbers for collectors. Previously, two other low mintage years occurred in 1970 and 1987 when the half dollar was only issued in Mint Sets.
The table below displays the mintage figures for circulation strike Kennedy Half Dollars. During the series, coins were struck for circulation at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. In 1964, the mint mark was located on the reverse of the coin, on the left side below the eagle’s leg. From 1968 to date, the mink mark was located on the obverse of the coin, above the date.
